New short story coming

Space-shipI’ve begun work on my next writing piece and this time I will take a heavy sci-fi focus. I’ve wanted to write a story based in deep space for a long time and now that I’ve got some fresh ideas and time under my belt I thought I’d get pen to paper.

The themes I want to cover in this short story are: survival, loneliness, desperation, happiness and unity. I’ll let you guess the story line from those key words.

Let’s hope that the change in setting will help spark my creativity to allow me to write a story for all sci-fi nerds to enjoy. (Even if that’s just me). Here goes nothing! *scribble scribble*

Lack of updates? Here’s why.

EvochronYup you guessed it, games.

A combination of the need to reduce stress and become more social with friends on weeknights has increased my need to play games. Which is not a bad thing at all, since 1: I love games and 2: games help me accomplish those two needs (stress relief and social interaction).

One game in particular which has taken a fair amount of my time recently is League of Legends. While it is not a new game, I sat on my hands for a long time, as I expected the game to be the same old RPG action game which you can play with friends. Well I was wrong. What I didn’t expect was a fantasy style Counter Strike (if you can imagine that). I say Counter Strike here because the game relies on gameplay more than story. While I still feel quite n00b at the game so far, it definitely is one which I enjoy playing with friends. (My ID: TheLynchMobber) http://www.leagueoflegends.com/

Another game which has taken my fancy recently is Evochron Mercenary – a ‘lone-wolf’ space simulation game. What’s amazing about this game is that it was created by one guy, it contains one whole universe without boxed in “Warp” areas (i.e. EVE online), and an insane amount of realism regarding physics/planetary exploration/trading and combat. While the graphics aren’t the best I’ve seen in the genre, it is an indie game, thus the game play far outpaces the graphics quality. If you’re looking for something that isn’t as complex as the X series and you are sick of paying monthly fees for EVE online. I’d highly recommend you check this out. (You can also buy this game on steam which is very nice!) http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/

Bioshock Infinite, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Age of Empires 2 HD

Bioshock Infinite

What a good time to be a gamer! Three awesome games out within a month and I’ve got next to no time to play them. I’ve been tossing my free time up between writing and gaming, but recently gaming has taken a lead most likely because of the need to de-stress.

Out of these awesome three titles, I must say I have enjoyed Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate the most. For those who don’t know, the game doesn’t hold much in the way of story line but makes up for this with strong game-play and re-playability. You basically need to keep killing dino-like monsters to craft new armor and weapons in order to take on even bigger monsters. Also I get to team up with my beautiful fiance for some double-team action. The graphics are probably the best I’ve seen on the 3ds and I’ll probably be playing this game for a long time. (Until Fire Emblem walks along later this month…)

I’ve also had a stab at the new Bioshock which has been pretty good but hasn’t really lived up to the hype that the media has given it. The story and graphics are amazing, but the actual gameplay feels VERY linear. I would almost rather watch a movie of the game rather than play it. I feel like all I need to do is shoot all the baddies as fast as I can so I can progress. It’s like playing Duck-Hunt on the NES with an awesome storyline. Actually, I make it sound worse than it is, but still I expected more in the way of gameplay in the way of tactical combat, puzzles and thinking. The game almost makes me feel like I’m an idiot, as there is almost no cognitive ability needed to progress in the game. I wish they would go back to the old ways of the ‘shock’ franchise – cough, cough, System Shock.

I have to end this update on a high note with AOE2:HD. I was so happy to see that this game was given a face-lift as it really deserves it. The game also received a complete overhaul of the multi-player architecture which is a nice update as this game deserves to be played with other people. If you want to make one purchase on Steam this month, I’d definitely add this to your collection.

Lastly, I just want to put this down in writing that I want to put another flash fiction up onto the site this week so keep your eyes peeled for this one. I’ll be putting my current emotions into the piece so it should be an interesting read.

Quick Easter Update

20130330_123041Wow, it’s past Easter already? 2013 is going so fast I think I’ll need to move to the country to slow down time. I’ve spent the past weekend on my fiance’s Farm in Northern-Victoria. The thing I miss about the country are the people, who are overly kind and caring compared to their city dwelling counterparts. Don’t get me wrong, there are great people who live in the city, but here in Sydney I feel that the idiots out number the intellectuals. Oh well.

So while I was enjoying my country get away, I forgot my sun screen and instead of turning into a country boy, I turned into a red neck (photo on twitter). Funny that…

Anyway, enjoy your April firsts!

Update of the life of Daniel

ROXY

Wow, what a week. Things were quite busy over the last few days as I travelled to my home-town to surprise my mother for her birthday which worked out beautifully. I’m actually trying to write what happened into a flash fiction so keep tuned for that (I’m sure it will make my mum happy too). While back home I also visited Movieworld – a theme-park I hadn’t visited since high-school  so that was pretty fun. I should post some pictures of that too at some point.

Oh, something I’m not really looking forward to tomorrow is a visit to the dentist. Just before last weekend one of my teeth began to ache and now almost the whole right side of my bottom jaw is aching. Word of advice, if the dentist tells you that you need to take a wisdom tooth out – take it out. Otherwise, it will probably hurt like a bitch 4 months later. haha.

Anyway keep an eye out for the next update. Should be able to have the short story out by the weekend. I’m going to get back to watching some NRL (for those of you who don’t know what NRL is, it’s probably the best Australian sport link here. Probably the most brutally enjoyable sport next to Boxing and UFC in my opinion.)

Enjoy the rest of  your week readers :)
